Chapter 46 Departure

Maid Heather was the last to give her goodbye to Old Joseph.
She gave him a wink. He did not notice the wink.
"I trust the other maids in your care while we are away." Joseph headed next toward the chapel to say prayers before the trip. "Just you today, eh?"
"Yes. And there are others on their way to pick up the other wisemen?" "Yes, a day apart as you requested." The next day Allen too stopped at the chapel before leaving. Allen included in his prayers a special one for Toren, who had taken to his bed again. He took a long time, wanting to include the many people he had met. Finally he departed. In the wee hours of the morning, Toren took his last shuddering breath. "Goodbye Thomas, may God be with you."
Celeste's sweet voice did indeed cheer Thomas. He wished he could stay to return the favor.
Thomas hated leaving the maids with Toren so recently buried.
"May God be with you Celeste." He hesitated. "I'm sorry to leave you 3 like this."
"Lady Ebony is grieving too."
Thomas had not thought of it this way.
"Then I shan't keep her waiting."
Thomas said his prayers in the chapel. He asked God to forgive him for not thinking of this noblewoman. He asked God to watch over the maids in his absence. Then thinking of the grieving widow, the contestants, and the choice she would be making, he asked that God's Will be done.
