The next day Allen too stopped at the chapel before leaving. Allen included in his prayers a special one for Toren, who had taken to his bed again. He took a long time, wanting to include the many people he had met. Finally he departed.
In the wee hours of the morning, Toren took his last shuddering breath.
"Goodbye Thomas, may God be with you."
Celeste's sweet voice did indeed cheer Thomas. He wished he could stay to return the favor.

Thomas hated leaving the maids with Toren so recently buried.

Thomas had not thought of it this way.
"Then I shan't keep her waiting."
Thomas said his prayers in the chapel. He asked God to forgive him for not thinking of this noblewoman. He asked God to watch over the maids in his absence. Then thinking of the grieving widow, the contestants, and the choice she would be making, he asked that God's Will be done.
