Chapter 44 Ball in Hand

Lady Sylvia accompanied her husband to a party at the home of Lord Gabon Bushman, a nobleman of the Tribal Kingdom.

Sylvia was not in a party mood. She didn't care to tell her husband.

She could see how much he wanted them both to move past the loss of their baby. For the most part, Sylvia had. Yet she was not back to her high spirted self.

Despite lacking the party spirit, Sylvia truly did want to attend.

Lady Ebony cooked a meal, then excused herself.
Her husband proudly announced she carried his first baby. Sylvia felt a pang. She wasn't feeling as sick as she was after that bad bread, but wasn't incredibly hungry. Jack brought her a glass of orange juice. It was good. She'd never had anything quite like it. Jack tolder her an orange is like the lime the pirates ate to keep from getting sick.

After the meal, Jack introduced some of the tribal men to his pirate game. While Jack explained the rules Sylvia looked Lord Gabon out of the corner of her eye. The men of this kingdom wear so little! Not that I can complain... Jack got the ball in the air, then Gabon caught it in his hand. I didn't expect to see him ball in hand!

Sylvia laughed at this thought. Her husband gave her a stern look, then gently explained the rules again. At his admonishment her mind went inexplicably to her baby that would never be. This happened less and less often. But it still hurt. Sylvia began to cry. She hurried from the room so she wouldn't disrupt the party. In her effort to cry in silence she shook terribly, then became ill.
If I hadn't been so sad, I wouldn't have eaten that bit of bad bread. This made Sylvia angry, though she didn't understand why.
