Chapter 55 Maid Heather's Wish

When Thomas Wiseman arrived home he took to his bed, exhausted.
At that moment Celeste was just waking, taking a private moment for herself. Celeste still felt the pain of Toren's passing.
Maid Patty not knowing Thomas had arrived, had been gardening in her nightgown.
She clutched her stomache. It was in this way she too felt the pain of Toren's passing.
Maid Heather was dressing in her room. She had heard Thomas arrive and hoped to greet him. As she dressed she heard him go to the men's quarters, then silence. She thought he either slept or wished to be alone. She did not disturb him.
Maid Heather felt a different pain that intensified with the arrival of Thomas.
Maid Heather longed to marry. Toren's passing had been a reminder of time passing, that she could become an old maid.
Thomas coming home reminded her of Lady Ebony, who had married already, and was destined to marry again. Men had flocked to her, competing for her hand in marriage.
Maid Heather deserved what Ebony was getting but could not have it.
Her once wealthy family had sold all they had attempting to cure the plague. But there was no cure. The rest had all died when she was very young. They had made no marriage arrangements for their little daughter. The house was sold, she had no property. She was fortunate her mother's clothes were in such good condition...it was evidence her mother had died rather young. It was all Heather had of her family.
With no home or property, she could not call for a contest as was being held for Lady Ebony's hand in marriage.
Now she would do something she had longed to do since she had arrived at the Sanctuary.
Maid Heather grasped a coin tightly. She stood before the well and crossed her arms.
"I wish for love. Take care of my wish good well. Take care that you send me the man that walks this earth that will love me best, that I will love best." As her coin dropped a light shone from the well.
Maid Heather closed her eyes waiting for what was to come. "Excuse me lovely maiden. I am Serious Dwarf, a merchant from the Magic Kingdom. Are you the reason this well has brought me here?" Maid Heather had dropped her head shyly.
"This is the Sanctuary of Grunwald. I am Maid Heather, a Maid in Waiting without family."
She lifted her face to that of a bearded old man. Somehow it reminded her of the kindness of the wisemen who had taken her in. Serious Dwarf was staring into her eyes, eyes that she had been named for, for they reminded her mother of heather.
He leaned toward her and kissed her full on the lips. This was more than her maiden heart could take. It gave way within her, taking him in. With this one kiss, Maid Heather fell in love.
Then he left. Heather asked not why. It had all been said already. She a noble woman without family, he a merchant. If she had a male relative or an older female relative she could marry this man. Since she did not, she must marry noble or royalty.
She could not sorrow over this. She was too much in love. It filled every part of her being.
