There had been a very small number who had hid so well the wisemen did not find them. It is they who buried the dead and cleaned the town. It had taken years. They now served the people of the kingdom, as gardeners, maids, etc. Who else would make better caretakers of the kingdom?
Now that the kingdom has come alive again, Old Joseph decided to venture out of his home. The old man traveled far and grew quite weary.
"Good Sir, my wife has prepared more food than we could possibly eat. Would you care to join us?"

"I am John and this is my wife Sandy."
"And your family name?"
The man hesitated. "I was quite small when my family died of the plague. I do not know my family name."
Old Joseph studied the peasant man. It was clear the man was quite bothered.

Old Joseph left the peasant home rested and content. He was quite happy to have made the journey.
It's so like the peasants to show royalty how to behave!
ReplyDeleteI think Old Joseph is a keeper.
One question...Sandy? Really. Sandy? I don't know about that name in those times. ;)
I'm letting myself get away with Sandy on the idea that she may have been named that to describe her in some way. Such as hair, skin, eyes, or even being born in a sandy place, or by parents who dwelled in a sandy place or dreamed of a sandy place, etc.
ReplyDeleteMy wisemen have a peculiar spot as far as rank. They are considered peasants. However, when it comes to marriage, they could marry any class...if the upper class chose them. Also they are favored for friendships and are generally respected. (No sim is perfect!)
The wisemen do their best not to view others as less than themselves. (I've already had at least one wiseman feeling bad for judging someone in his thoughts.) Though some are better at this than others. Remember Thomas fighting with the king? The point is they are very content to be viewed as peasants, and try to be humble. What is more, it is a life these men have chosen.
Thoroughly confused yet?
Oh yes, and the peasants likely think of themselves as far less than the wisemen (class wise) and the wisemen do not see the peasants as being less. So I can easily see why the way they interacted made Old Joseph seem like royalty.
